The purpose of the North Kansas City Source Water Protection Plan (SWPP) is to identify and manage potential risks that could impact the City’s groundwater supply and to establish long-term strategies for source water protection, emergency preparedness, public education, and sustainable water resource management. The plan includes delineation of the Source Water Protection Area (SWPA), inventorying of potential contaminant sources, emergency action strategies, and implementation recommendations intended to help protect the City’s drinking water system.

The City’s water system serves approximately 2,100 metered connections through six active groundwater wells drawing from the Missouri River alluvial aquifer. Protection of these groundwater resources is critical to maintaining safe and reliable drinking water service for residents, businesses, industry, and institutional users throughout the community. 

The SWPP was formally adopted by City Council on June 2, 2026.
