The City passes ordinances and adopts codes that guide the development of the City and ensure public safety. The Community Development Department manages and regulates Chapter 15 of the Code of Ordinances – Buildings and Construction. This chapter sets the minimum requirements for construction within North Kansas City.

International standards adopted by the City include the International Building Code, International Mechanical Code, International Plumbing Code, International Fuel Gas Code, International Property Maintenance Code, International Residential Code, International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, International Existing Building Code, the National Electrical Code, the International Energy Conservation Code, and the International Fire Code.
