Project Overview

The HeatSMART project “Co-Developing Solutions for Monitoring and Augmenting Resilience to Extreme heat in Traditionally Industrial Communities” is a university-government partner project funded by NASA’s Disasters Program.

The City of North Kansas City is partnering with research teams at the University of Alabama and Texas A&M University to create data-informed heat mitigation strategies to be implemented in Northtown. This project will serve as a blueprint for future infrastructure, resources, and procedures regarding urban heat management in North Kansas City and beyond.

This three-year project has three main research phases/objectives:

  1. Assessing Local Heat Risks and Community Needs
  2. Co-Designing Heat Resilience Solutions
  3. Implementation, Maintenance, and Expansion

Avenues in Fall

NKC is in the first stage of project development. Assessing local heat risks and community needs is the building block for the success of HeatSMART. Successful urban heat solutions are not possible without the input of our citizens. This is where you come in!

Survey

An online survey has been created to collect data on the realities of how heat effects NKC community members. This survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete and each response aids greatly in informing researchers on the current challenges and inspires new solutions.

Click here to record your response on the HeatSMART survey.

Pop-up Event

The NKC HeatSMART team will have a pop-up event to increase awareness of the project and encourage participation during the Planning and Design Charrette event for Northtown 2040.

Join us for the two-day design charrette where we will discuss all things Northtown.
