• On Wednesday, August 5, we celebrated the retirement of Battalion Chief Joe Bays after 32 years of dedicated service with the Fire Department. Thank you for your commitment to our community – we wish you all the best in this next chapter!

   

• Join us for Bounce & Balance, featuring a bounce house, sno-cones, and the opportunity to learn about and ask questions regarding the proposed 2026-2027 budget.  This event will be on Saturday, August 8, from 9-10:30 a.m. at North Kansas City Parks & Recreation, 1201 Clark Ferguson.

   

• North Kansas City's new Community Composting Bins are open at Macken Park (1002 Clark Ferguson Drive) and the YMCA overflow lot (1900 Iron Street, next to the Ripple Glass bin).  This program is FREE for North Kansas City residents and makes it easy to keep food scraps out of the landfill while creating nutrient-rich compost for the community.  Learn more about the program and how to participate at kccancompost.com/nkccomposts.  Join us for a Ribbon Cutting and Program Kick-Off Celebration on Saturday, August 8, at 10 a.m. at the composting bin located in Macken Park. • Want to take an active role in preserving and sharing the history of Northtown? The North Kansas City Historical Society could use your help!  Join us for a volunteer workday at the North Kansas City Public Library on Saturday, Aug. 8, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Can't make it at 9? No problem — drop in whenever you can.  We'll be sorting and organizing collections, sleeving historic photographs, and identifying the people, places, and dates captured in our images. If you're a longtime Northtowner with memories to share, we'd especially love your help.  It's also a great opportunity to learn more about volunteering with the Historical Society on a regular basis. Hope to see you there!

   

• Join us in celebrating #CityHallSelfie Day on Tuesday, August 11 — a fun way to highlight local government service and the people and places that make our city run.  Stop by North Kansas City City Hall, snap a selfie, and share it using #CityHallSelfie to show your support for the work happening at the local level. We’d love to see your smiling face!

   

• Join the NKC Neighbors Ad Hoc Committee for a Happy Hour on Thursday, August 13, from 6–8 p.m. at Rewind Video & Dive (behind Screenland). New and longtime residents alike are invited to stop by, meet their neighbors, and make connections.

   

   

• Mark your calendar for National Night Out on Friday, August 14, from 4:30–7 p.m. at Macken Park!  Hosted by the North Kansas City Police Department, National Night Out is a free, family-friendly event that brings neighbors, local businesses, and first responders together to build stronger community partnerships and promote public safety. Enjoy an evening of interactive activities, K-9 demonstrations, police vehicles and specialty units, community booths, games, and more. It's a great opportunity to meet your local officers, learn about the services available in our community, and spend time with friends and neighbors. We look forward to seeing you at Macken Park!

   

• The August 14 Friday Night Concert at Macken Park will be held alongside National Night Out! Both events are free and open to the public; we encourage visitors to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets. The Beer Garden will open at 6 p.m., and music will begin at 7 p.m. Join us at the Festival Shelter in Macken Park to sit back, relax, and enjoy live music with Friendly Thieves as the headline!

   

• It’s block party season!  A block party is a great way to celebrate and encourage stronger communities.  North Kansas City residents may apply for a grant to host a neighborhood block party.  Each grant will reimburse eligible expenses up to $400 per event.  For more information on how to apply for a permit for a block party, please visit https://www.nkc.org/our-city/register-to-for/neighborhood-block-party-grants.

   

• This next Movie at Macken is Friday, August 28, featuring GOAT! The movie will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the NKC Parks and Recreation Center. Snow & Roast will have shaved ice, drinks, and popcorn available for purchase. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy a free movie in the park!

   

• As North Kansas Citians, we are deeply connected to our town's history, but have you ever wanted to dig a little deeper into the history of your home or a particular building? Then the quarterly NKC Historical Society meeting on Saturday, August 29, from 10 a.m. to Noon is for you! At the NKC Public Library, we'll explore the many research resources available through local organizations. From historic maps and photographs to newspapers, city directories, and property records, you'll learn how to use both print and digital resources to begin piecing together the stories behind the places that matter most to you.
