• There are a few exciting promotions to announce within the NKC Fire Department! Steve Nicholson will be promoted to Battalion Chief, B-Shift, effective August 7, and Nathaniel Pike will be promoted to Captain, effective August 8. Congratulations on your well-deserved promotions!

   

• Beginning on July 27, Spire will begin a gas line replacement along the East side of Swift St, from 21^st Ave to 16^th Ave. Two-way traffic will be maintained, but drivers and residents can expect lane shifts and parking restrictions on the East side of Swift Street.

   

• NKC residents are invited to take part in a free Household Hazardous Waste drop-off event in Gladstone on Saturday, August 1, from 8 a.m. to Noon at Happy Rock Park.  NKC’s membership in the MARC Solid Waste Management District gives residents access to regional Household Hazardous Waste collection events, providing a convenient way to safely dispose of items such as paint, automotive fluids, batteries, lawn and garden chemicals, glues, and household cleaners.  Take advantage of this convenient opportunity to keep hazardous materials out of landfills and protect our environment.

   

• Join us for Bounce & Balance, featuring a bounce house, sno-cones, and the opportunity to learn about and ask questions regarding the proposed 2026-2027 budget.  This event will be on Saturday, August 8, from 9-10:30 a.m. at North Kansas City Parks & Recreation, 1201 Clark Ferguson.

   

• Want to take an active role in preserving and sharing the history of Northtown? The North Kansas City Historical Society could use your help!  Join us for a volunteer workday at the North Kansas City Public Library on Saturday, Aug. 8, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Can't make it at 9? No problem — drop in whenever you can.  We'll be sorting and organizing collections, sleeving historic photographs, and identifying the people, places, and dates captured in our images. If you're a longtime Northtowner with memories to share, we'd especially love your help.  It's also a great opportunity to learn more about volunteering with the Historical Society on a regular basis. Hope to see you there!

   

• It’s block party season!  A block party is a great way to celebrate and encourage stronger communities.  North Kansas City residents may apply for a grant to host a neighborhood block party.  Each grant will reimburse eligible expenses up to $400 per event.  For more information on how to apply for a permit for a block party, please visit https://www.nkc.org/our-city/register-to-for/neighborhood-block-party-grants.

   

• The August 14 Friday Night Concert at Macken Park will be held alongside National Night Out! Both events are free and open to the public; we encourage visitors to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets. The Beer Garden will open at 6 p.m., and music will begin at 7 p.m. Join us at the Festival Shelter in Macken Park to sit back, relax, and enjoy live music with Friendly Thieves as the headline!

   

• Mark your calendar for National Night Out on Friday, August 14, from 4:30–7 p.m. at Macken Park!  Hosted by the North Kansas City Police Department, National Night Out is a free, family-friendly event that brings neighbors, local businesses, and first responders together to build stronger community partnerships and promote public safety. Enjoy an evening of interactive activities, K-9 demonstrations, police vehicles and specialty units, community booths, games, and more. It's a great opportunity to meet your local officers, learn about the services available in our community, and spend time with friends and neighbors. We look forward to seeing you at Macken Park!

   

• This next Movie at Macken is Friday, August 28, featuring GOAT! The movie will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the NKC Parks and Recreation Center. Snow & Roast will have shaved ice, drinks, and popcorn available for purchase. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy a free movie in the park!

   

• As North Kansas Citians, we are deeply connected to our town's history, but have you ever wanted to dig a little deeper into the history of your home or a particular building? Then the quarterly NKC Historical Society meeting on Saturday, August 29 from 10 a.m. to Noon is for you! At the NKC Public Library, we'll explore the many research resources available through local organizations. From historic maps and photographs to newspapers, city directories, and property records, you'll learn how to use both print and digital resources to begin piecing together the stories behind the places that matter most to you.
