The City publishes Week in Review (WIR) weekly to inform the community about local news.

Post Date:03/27/2026 3:47 PM

Friday Greetings,

  • On Monday, the City hosted the inaugural Northtown Supper in partnership with NKC High School, inviting residents to pull up a chair and connect with neighbors. The event was well attended, and we’re already looking forward to the next gathering—the Northtown Supper Potluck on Saturday, May 30, from 5:30–8 p.m. at Macken Park.  If you missed it, you can watch the welcoming remarks here: https://youtu.be/SGhKPC81ZGo?si=dnwp958V--FRzZWL.  Special thanks to Andy Staver for the photos!

  • On Tuesday, the City hosted its annual NKC Candidate Forum, facilitated by NKC High School debate students and featuring candidates for the April 7, 2026, City Council election. Candidate Rita Pearce had a prior commitment, and candidate Yvonne Salinas was unable to attend due to illness. If you missed it, you can watch the Forum on the City’s YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/live/svI0oVpyFPI?si=dO1tN6NsMITNXrES.  Special thanks to Simon Johnson and Journey George for facilitating a great event!

  • On Friday afternoon, we gathered to remember and honor Firefighter Benoît Coussement (Badge #226). Benoît passed away unexpectedly on March 10, 2026, at just 29 years old. He will be remembered for his dedication to the fire service, his commitment to others, and the lasting impact he made on our department and community. He is survived by his wife and stepdaughter, whom he loved dearly. Donations in his honor may be made to The Yard Foundation’s Mayday Campaign to support his loved ones, www.theyardfoundation.org/mayday/coussement.

  • March 15 through April 3, Waggin’ Trail Dog Park will be closed for aerating, seeding, and to give the grass time to establish and grow. Join us on April 4 for our annual dog Easter event, Boneanza, from 10:30 a.m. to Noon.

  • Join the NKC Library for a hands-on Make Your Own Birdhouse program on Saturday, April 4, from 10-11:30 a.m.! Builders of all ages are invited to assemble and decorate their very own wooden birdhouse to take home. We’ll provide all the supplies you need—just bring your creativity! Registration is required: https://www.nkcpl.org/event/myo-birdhouse-3529

  • NKC Parks & Recreation is looking for artists with an affiliation to North Kansas City to create one-of-a-kind murals for benches made out of retired wind turbine blades! A theme is provided for each bench to fit the environment in which it will be installed. As these benches will be placed in parks, we strongly encourage an overall nature theme, with themes including pollinators, forest, and community. Deadline to apply is Sunday, April 5, by 11:59 pm. For more information or to apply, visit www.nkc.org/muralbenches.

  • Join the North Kansas City Community Enrichment Advisory Committee (CEAC) for a day of service, snacks, and community on Saturday, April 18, from 8:30 a.m. to Noon!  Celebrate Earth Day with kid-friendly activities, snacks, bubbles, sidewalk chalk, local eco-organizations, and custom event bandanas. Participants will meet at City Hall, 2010 Howell Street, to receive City-provided equipment (gloves, grabbers, and bags) and then head to designated cleanup locations. For questions about the event, please contact Megan Summers at 816-274-6006 or msummers@nkc.org.

  • The 2026 Spring edition of the North Kansas City Connection has been loaded to the City’s website: www.nkc.org/NKCConnection.  Residents will receive their newsletters soon.

  • NKC Parks Summer Youth Baseball & Softball registration is open! Youth baseball and softball leagues are non-competitive and focus on skill development, learning the game, teamwork, and fun.
