WIR 2/20/26

The City publishes Week in Review (WIR) weekly to inform the community about local news.

Post Date:02/20/2026 2:29 PM

Friday Greetings,

  • Join Mayor Smith for a NorthTown Hall on Tuesday, February 24, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the NKC Parks & Recreation Center.  NorthTown Halls are open forums for all community members to attend and ask any questions.

  • Hear ye, hear ye!  We challenge YOU to take the Clay County 250 Citizen Challenge!  The 250 Citizen Challenge is a practical, positive program that helps people build stronger civic habits step by step—learning, serving, and showing up. Participants earn points for completing simple, everyday civic tasks—like reading a founding document, attending a public meeting, helping our community, or writing a letter. The Challenge is open to everyone, and each action brings you closer to earning a commemorative Challenge Coin. Learn more or take the Challenge at www.claycounty250.org/citizen-challenge/.

  • MoDOT KC will host an open-house style public meeting for the I-29/35 bridge replacement project on Thursday, February 26, from 4–6 p.m. at the NKC Parks and Recreation Department, 1201 Clark Ferguson Drive. The project covers Interstate 29/35 in the Kansas City metro area north and south of the Bond Bridge in Clay and Jackson counties, and attendees may drop in to ask questions, learn about the project, and provide comments (no formal presentation). A self-guided virtual presentation will also be available starting at 4 p.m. on February 26 on the project webpage (www.modot.org/projects/i-29i-35-viaduct-bridges-replacement-project-jackson-and-clay-counties), and an online survey will be open until March 12, 2026, at 4 p.m.

  • Who's ready to start thinking about spring? Join presenter Myriam Totta on Thursday, February 26 for a conversation about starting (or optimizing!) your veggie garden this year. Learn about some veggies that do especially well here and get tips and tricks for getting underway with soil prep and planting. Feel free to bring your questions! Registration required at www.nkcpl.org/event/lets-get-gardening-10-spring-vegetables-kansas-city-3439.

  • The City of North Kansas City will host a Parking Study Listening Session on Friday, February 27, from 9-10:30 a.m. at the Garney Construction Training Room (1700 Swift St., Suite 200). This session is an opportunity for businesses—especially those in the downtown area and along Swift Street and Armour Road—to participate in the parking study and share feedback on current parking conditions, challenges, and how future parking infrastructure can better support business operations and growth.

  • Save the Date! The City invites the public to attend an Open House for the North Kansas City Comprehensive Safety Action Plan, funded by the USDOT’s SS4A program, on Tuesday, March 10, from 5-7 p.m. at City Hall (2010 Howell St.), with formal presentations at 5:15 and 6:15 p.m. This drop-in event will share how community input and safety data shaped the plan, highlight targeted strategies to improve roadway safety for all users, and provide an opportunity to offer feedback. Public input gathered will be used to refine the Action Plan, which aims to reduce and ultimately eliminate roadway fatalities and serious injuries.

  • The City of North Kansas City is entering a new permit cycle under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Phase II MS4 stormwater program, which continues the City’s existing stormwater quality efforts. The City will submit an application for coverage under the Missouri Department of Natural Resources General Permit MOR04C by April 3, 2026.  As part of the Permit requirements, a public comment period is required to gather community feedback. For more information, to review the draft permit, and to provide comments, please visit: www.nkc.org/government/departments/public-works/stormwater.

  • The City of North Kansas City is pleased to extend the opportunity for businesses to apply for a grant through the Streetscape Beautification Program.  This City program was created to help beautify our town by matching funds for projects located along streets or highway rights-of-way.  The City will offer matching grants of up to $5,000, paid on a reimbursable basis.  Applications must be submitted by April 15, 2026, with a project completion date of September 1, 2026.  More information and the application can be found at www.nkc.org/government/departments/public-works/streetscape-beautification
