Friday Greetings,

The City of North Kansas City held a General Municipal Election on Tuesday, April 2. Congratulations to Councilmembers Bryant DeLong, Richard Stewart and Tom Farr on their re-elections and Councilmember-elect Jesse Smith.  The City’s Management Team will conduct an orientation with Councilmember-elect Jesse Smith on Thursday, April 11.

The Friends of the North Kansas City Public Library are hosting their Annual Book Sale event. The sale concludes April 6 and features thousands of gently used book & movie titles across a variety of genres.

In 2011, the City was awarded a grant through the Mid-America Regional Council’s (MARC) Smart Lights Program for the purchase and installation of 165 LED street lights.  The street lights were installed on Armour Road from Burlington to Iron Street, and along Swift from East 16th to East 23rd Avenue.  Last year many of the lights began to fail.  The manufacturer honored the warranty and provided replacement fixtures; the City paid for the labor cost of the replacement.  The replacements are of higher quality than the previous fixtures.

The Planning Commission has set the first Community For All Ages Silver Level work session for Wednesday, May 8 at 6 p.m.  The session will focus on housing and commercial development.

The City parking lot at 18th & Swift will be closed intermittently during the next week to permit geotechnical work. On Monday, April 8, the parking lot will be closed from 5 a.m. until approximately 11 a.m. to allow a survey using ground penetrating radar. The parking lot will reopen prior to peak lunch hours for nearby restaurants. Additional work is tentatively planned for April 10-12, when small areas of 4-6 parking spaces within the parking lot will be blocked off to permit borings to be done. The parking lot will remain open during this time. City crews will be putting up signs indicating these closures and appreciate the patience of nearby businesses as this work is completed.

Community Development will host a Zoning Ordinance Update Open House on Tuesday, April 9 from 4-6 p.m. at City Hall to gain feedback on the proposed updates.  To view the proposed updates, visit http://www.nkc.org/departments/community_development/current_projects/zoning_ordinance_update.

The City Council and the Planning Commission will conduct a joint work session on the proposed new zoning ordinance on Tuesday, April 30, at 6 p.m.
