Friday Greetings,

WSP, the engineering firm that the City is working with on our Armour Road Complete Street project, recently published a Vision Zero guidebook. Vision Zero is a global movement focused on ending roadway fatalities. The guidebook includes 18 case studies from around the world that are improving roadway safety and the Armour Road Complete Street is one of two U.S. projects included. The guidebook is available at https://www.wsp.com/en-GL/news/2018/vision-zero-a-road-transportation-system-free-of-fatalities-and-serious-injuries.

In 2011, the City received a grant to retrofit 160 streetlight fixtures from mercury vapor to LED lights through the Smart Lights Program sponsored by the Mid-America Regional Council.   The light fixtures, which have a 10-year warranty, were installed along Armour Road and Swift.  Over the past five weeks, forty of the LED street lights have either gone out or have become very dim.  Yesterday, staff was informed that the manufacturer is honoring the warranty and shipping 50 new and improved LED fixtures to the City. The City’s street light repair contractor, Black, and McDonald will begin retrofitting the new fixtures next week.

Municipal Services crews vacuumed leaves every day this week and completed all residential areas.  Weather permitting, they will clear the leaves again next week to finish the 2018 Leaf Pick Up Program.

Filing for the April 2, 2019, Municipal Election began on December 11 and will close on January 15, 2019. This year’s election is for one Council member from each ward to serve a two-year term.  The following candidates have filled: Ward 1 – Bryant DeLong; Ward 2 – Jessi Smith and Jane Quick; Ward 3 – Richard Stewart; Ward 4 – Tom Farr.

The North Kansas City Special Road District will host an election on April 2, 2019, for the position of Commissioner.  Declarations of candidacy can be made in the office of the Clay County Board of Election Commissioners, 100 West Mississippi, Liberty, Missouri, during their regular business hours. Candidates must be resident taxpayers of the district and filing will close on January 15, 2019.

The City received official notification that North Kansas City has been designated as a Bronze Level Community For All Ages.  The City will be presented with a recognition award at the January 18 First Suburbs Coalition Meeting.

The Winter 2019 edition of the North Kansas City Connection is now available on the City's website ---> https://goo.gl/gjsWBx   Residents will receive a copy in the mail soon.
