Mission Statement The mission of the North Kansas City Fire Department is to protect lives and conserve property by minimizing the frequency and effect of fires, medical and traumatic emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, disasters and other like occurrences. The methods used to accomplish this mission are emergency response, advanced life support, EMS, prevention, control, training, and public education. We are committed to utilize, to maximum efficiency and effectiveness, all resources provided by the businesses and citizens of North Kansas City and all applicable innovations. Department Overview The NKCFD is a career department with 62 full time employees. The Department has four 8-hour positions that take care of the administrative duties. The Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, Fire Marshal and Training Officer, A full time secretary aids them. The department has 57 suppression personnel that work 24-hour shifts. There are 19 people assigned to each of the 3 shifts, with a minimum manning of 15 per shift. All fire personnel are trained in medical and fire suppression / prevention related fields as well as the handling of hazardous material incidents. The North Kansas City Fire Department is made up of 47 EMT's and 16 Paramedics. All fire personnel have been State Certified in Fire Fighter I - II training. The North Kansas City Fire Department is fortunate in having several employees who have received associate Degrees in Fire Science, while other fire personnel are working toward their Bachelors and Masters degrees in fire service related fields.
NKCFD operates out of two fire stations. The main station (Station I) is located at 710 East 18th street; Station II is located at Bedford & Taney in the Paseo Industrial District. Our normal response to a fire call is an Assistant Chief, two engines, one 75' ladder truck, one 105' aerial basket and two ACLS ambulances. The North Kansas City Fire Department is proud of its four (4) minute average response time to any point inside the city limits.
By the end of 2004 NKCFD will have logged approximately 1700 activity numbers. These numbers represent many types of calls and daily activities. They include EMS, fires, false alarms, good will calls, service calls, public education, company fire surveys and training. Between calls fire personnel normally devote their mornings to one of many activities with various training topics scheduled daily. Fridays are reserved for apparatus maintenance; where all fire equipment and apparatus are cleaned and thoroughly inspected, in order to supplement the daily maintenance checks. Monday through Thursday, a variety of activities are carried out including EMS and fire suppression training, fire inspections, testing of fire hydrants and fire hose. Besides those activities you can always see North Kansas Fire Crews out in the community doing fire education at special events or meeting the citizens in the community by conducting blood pressure checks at the Community Center and other city events. |
